When did people from Italy, France and Spain come to Australia?
Australian society was characterised by an expanded migration of people, especially men from southern Europe, the Adriatic and the Mediterranean in the years prior to the Second World War (prior to 1939). This migration has contributed to the making of modern Australia.
They came in late 1850 s , around 2000 Italians came to Australia from northern cities like Turin, Milan, Rome and many more cites coming to Australia.
France 1786
Lots of French citizens came to Australia in 1788 in the First Fleet as refugees and convicts
Spain 1797
September 1st many Spanish people came to Australia in 1797 as Spain's first settlers
Why did people from Italy , France and Spain come to Australia
In this century, many Spaniards escaped the nation's deepening economic troubles , as the youth unemployment reached 60% in parts of their country. Many Spanish people came to Australia in the early 2000s looking for work.
The main reason that the French migrants came to Australia was because of the hardships they faced after World War 2. This period is very significant for the French migrants that traveled to Australia in the thirty years following the war. More French migrants arrived in Australia than at any other time in the history of the French presence in this country.
Italian migrated to Australia in the late 19th century and much of the 20th century. This was fueled by the same factors that drove Italians to the America - political upheaval and poor economic conditions in there home country. Also the changes in the US immigration policy had a direct effect on the flow to Australian shores.
What challenges did Italy, Spain and France face?
Unfortunately many of these people from Italy, Spain and France suffered from racism, because of the cultural differences between them and Australians. There were many differences between each culture and often that caused anger between people which led to a negative relationship between the cultures.
Also, for all three cultures it was very difficult traveling for a long period of time on boats. It also lead to lots of sickness and death for some people on the boats. When they got to Australia they were also put in to detention programs where they were treated very badly. This was a very poor experience for all people traveling to Australia.
What problems do they face today?
Immigration is much safer today and the ability to travel quickly across the world is much easier for people. However there is still problems with being able to gain permanent residency or citizenship within Australia. However there is still a high demand of people wanting to move here.
However racism stills exists within our community especially between cultures that are very different in many ways. Unfortunately there is a lack of understanding between cultures which often leads to arguments.
Facets of their culture that we should admire and respect
How we can honour and respect that culture today?
Treating people from different cultures how we would treat people from ours. Appreciating the culture at school and learning more about each culture through others. The more that we learn about each culture the more we can learn to respect them.
